Miguel Cabrera's on-base percentage

Question:  Search the web and find a definition of the on-base percentage (OBP).  Find statistics on the components of the on-base percentage for Miguel Cabrera.  Based on this data calculate Miguel Cabrera’s on-base percentage.

Answer:  The formula for on-based percentage is

OBP=(H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP+SF)

Where:

H is the number of hits,

BB is the number of base on balls,

HBP is the number of times a hitter is hit by the pitch,

AB is at bats,

SF is sacrifice flies.

Many baseball statistic web sites have information on hits, bases on balls, and at bats.

From the MLB site I found that Miguel Cabrera in 2012 had 622 at bats, 205 hits, and 66 walks.  The MLB site does not appear to have information on times hit by pitch or the number of sacrifice flies.

I was able to find some information on the number of times a player was hit by a pitch at http://www.teamrankings.com/mlb/player-stat/hit-by-pitch

Miguel Cabrera was hit by a pitch 4 times during the 2012 regular season.

I was not able to get information on the number of sacrifice flies.

Instead of calculating the official OBP I calculate a modified on-base percentage OBPM, which omits information on sacrifice flies.

OBPM=(H+BB+HBP)/(AB+BB+HBP)

Plugging numbers from the chart below into the OBPM formula we get

OBPM=(205+66+4)/(622+66+4)

Or

OBPM=275/692.=0.397

The official on-base percentage OBP, which incorporates information on the number of sacrifice flies is 0.393.    For extra credit calculate the number of sacrifice flies.

Also, you may want to look at this on-base percentage calculator on the web.

I think tomorrow’s problem will look at the slugging percentage.
