Adding three fractions

Question:  What is the easiest way to add  5/16, 1/8 and 45/90.

Answer:   A person on autopilot might get the common denominator for the three fractions and add.   It pays to look at the numbers for a second.

1/8 is the same as 2/16 so 1/8 + 5/16 is equal to 2/16 + 5/16 which is 7/16.

45/90 is the same as 1/2 which is the same as 8/16.

The answer is 7/16 + 8/16 which is 15/16.
